Do you have the same amount of box's as female birds they all need their own or they'll kick out what's in the boxes so they can have it...

How can you tell a male tiel from a female tiel and secondly, can you teach a female tiel to talk as well as a male tiel?

Some mutations are very hard to sex. It is almost impossible to guarantee the sex of a young cockatiel just by looking at it, DNA sexing is one sure way. If your in Australia You can get your bird DNA sexed. Please look at the links section of our website.

A friend's cockatiel (more lika a soul mae) recently died from Lead poisoning. This wonderful character (the bird), whose name is Buddy had contracted a viral disease and spent some time at the Vet. As a welcome home, Buddy's devoted owner purchases a new and better cage. Buddy was dead within a couple of weeks. There was no warning on the new cage or instructions on preparing the cage for safe use. Is this a common problem? Is there some point of contact for Buddy's owner to try to have some warning system put in place to protect others from this horrible and unnecessary fate.
Reply
This is a common problem known as heavy metal poisoning. There is quite a lot of info on the net on this subject. Unfortunatley alot of the cages we buy are imported from oversear and because they are for animal use the labeling for safety is probably under estimated rather than if it were an item for human use.Perhaps the Dept of Fair Trading could be a start if your in Australia :

I was told by my vets to wash a cage out with warm, soapy water and then spray it all over with vinegar (a natual disinfectant) and then let the cage dry naturally in the sun. It has always worked for me, when I've prepared my cages...

I have a pearl cockatiel ,how can you tell the sex, likes males not females not a squawker but has started a habit of sitting on top of the cage talking in cockatiel quietly,i can do anything with it scratch his head with my nose, hope the bloody thing is not falling in love with me,does,nt talk yet.
Reply
At around 6 months of age, pearl cockatiels will start to lose the pearl pattern. The older they get the more obvious it becomes. That is as they moult and as the new feathers grow back they will have less and less of the pearl pattern. Females on the other hand will maintain their strong pearl pattern for life. I cannot be sure if it loves you or not, its coming up to Valentines Day soon, so maybe keep an eye out for the mail box. There may be something in it for you from the cockatiel. ha ha :)

I'm concern about my female cockatiel, on Oct 18, 11 she mate, after that she had a ball under her breast, so I thought she was pregnant now the ball went down and it's close to the cloaca but she has not lay any eggs, she goes inside her box with the male and stays there but nothing happens. She looks find, she is eating and acting normal but I don't think that it takes that long to lay eggs. Can you tell me please what is wrong with her?

I am moving to Darwin, NT, Australia from the U.S.A. I have a pet cockatiel, but from what I've seen, no birds (pets or otherwise) are allowed in to Australia unless they are coming from New Zealand. I understand the nature of this policy, since it would be terrible for Australia's native birds to be exposed to diseases, etc. However, my pet cockatiel is a member of my family, would never be going outside (at most, on a balcony), and would not be exposing other birds to illnesses, even if she were sick. Does anyone know of any way to have an exception made for a single pet bird? Any paperwork I can fill out? We're heartbroken at the prospect of leaving her.

The feathers shouldn't take long to grow back. Just make sure that with any birds, NEVER cut past the third set of feathers on wings as you could accidently nick the blood vein running through it and the bird could suffer and die...

Hi there, I have a sweet little female Lutino who looks like she is about to lay eggs. She hides under the paper on the floor of her cage (when she isn't eating it) and will hiss a bit at me when I talk to her. Later she will quite happily come out of her cage for her cuddles. She isn't ill and is eating and drinking okay. Is this normal. Also, how can I get her to eat fruit and veg...I have tried before and she ignores it :)

Hi, I hope you can help me with this problem, I have a 5 year old female cockateil and sadly her partner few away two years ago. They were very much in love and had two babies. Now the problem is she has 'shacked up' with one of the babies, he has sex regularly with Marley and another female. There is another complication, as another male bird has been what appears to be madly in love with Marley for about 4 years. He seems obsessed with her. Now at every opportunity both males are fighting over Marley. flying into each other and chasing the other one away from her. Marley is continually stalked by these two birds. I have other females in the aviary, but both males are obsessed with Marley. Should I seperate one of the males and if so, which one. Does anyone have any advice please.

Dear Patrick (President): On reading a comprehensive article on Cockatiels in the Habitat section of "The West Australian" this morning I am somewhat alarmed that you stated carers need to trim the birds wings (which is essential) however you failed miserably in your duty of care to these wonderful birds by not stressing the importance of great care in doing so...I consider this the most important aspect of caring for any bird that roams outside it's cage!

Hi there,I have a question. In the US it seems the rarest cockatiel to find is a normal with NO splits. While I was looking at some Aus. Sites I also noticed that there were breeders also looking for normals with NO splits. Is it also uncommon to find pure normals in captivity there? We do have several US breeders working backwards to breed out the splits working towards some lines of normals in the pure form. Are there also breeders in Australia doing this too? And one other question, as to the wild cockatiel, those would be illegal to capture and breed and how is this controlled?

We have a male cockatiel that is 12 years old this month. I feel we have done him an injustice by keeping him on his own for 12 years, although he does have a close relationship with my son and he gets to fly/have outside cage time around the house almost everyday for sometimes 1-3 hours. My questions are - is it not too late to get him a partner? Female or male? (I notice he masturbates alot on his perch and makes himself a cubby under the paper). How do I introduce them? I don't want to support pet shops, so where can I get another bird from. I originally got Charlie from a neighbour whose pair bred and she reared the chicks. Thanks

Hi, I have obtained two cockatiels many years ago via an ad in the paper. I am now thinking of relocating overseas and the birds need some form of identification. But only one of my tiels wears a metal clip. At the time of purchase I didn't think much of it, but now I somehow need a registered clip. Any ideas on where I can obtain that? Do you offer cockatiel registration by any chance?

I hope it is a male (that is suppose to be what I payed for), but its cheeks are bright orange. He whistles great and talks a little and responds in whistling to him .How can we train him to stop biting and behave. If I got him a mate would he behave better? but can I bring him inside on to his stand if he has another. Would he not want to be with us if hew had a mate?.

Katherine, I highly recommend getting your male cockatiel a female companion. I myself have a male cockatiel (who is friendly but not tame) that was on his own for quite a few years and I introduced to him a female companion. The rest is history. They hit it off!!! They are so beautiful together and share a very special bond. I love watching them groom each other and rub their heads together. It is the most beautiful thing and getting him a companion was the best thing I could have done for him. Mind you they have had some babies too :)

I would like to know if I get another bird would our bond together break? Would she not want to spend any more time with me? Also is I was to give attention to the other bird will she hate me? I was thinking of getting a hand reared baby boy (normal gray).

Is there a certain way of introducing new toys and objects into a cage or around the bird? My cockatiel (two year old girl) is scared of new objects, toys, noises and people. She always runs away from new things or hides behind my neck. This all started happening after she was nearly swooped by a magpie when I had her outside with me on the grass ( the breeder recommend taking her outside to play on the grass because she always did this with all the birds she raised). I have never taken her outside again but she has still frightened of things unless I hold it in my hand or she watches it from a distance.

I have a cockatiel who was biting under his wing. Took him to vet in June. Was prescribed enrofloxican and meloxicam. He seemed to be progressing very well. However on Monday he seemed to lose ability to move his wings or walk. I took him back to the vet who said it was probably neurological and to continue the medicine but there was nothing they could do for him. I have isolated him in a small cage and he is eating seed and spinach and drinking but he is struggling to walk or get on a perch but if I pick him up he can sort of grasp my fingers. The vet was not optimistic about the outcome but I find it hard to accept euthanising him as he is still eating and chirping. He is a dear little thing but obviously if he is in pain then there is no choice. He is just over 6years young. Please help.

My cockatiels has sat on my head - she did this to the vet too at a check up, and has sat on my shoulder. Naturally, they go for the highest perch. If you go to an animal rescue that takes in birds, you can visit in the store before hand and feed a little millet while you are cage side. That may give you an idea how amiable the bird(s) are. As for getting a pal for one you have already, make sure you give room for a second feeding bowl to take the tension off the first few feedings at least. Sharing might not come easy at first, later it will. Keep extra healthy treats available so the competition is low for you. And, do not disappear to work and leave the two alone right away. Take the time to be home all weekend to see the transition, if you have a spare cage - or a traveling case, dust that off just in case some serious feathers get ruffled in a battle of WW3, lol.

I have a male yellow pied who is approx. 15 yrs old. He has gone very yellow in his feathers that visitors comment on it when they haven't seen him in a while. He also has whispy fluffy feathers all over. Is this normal? He also seems to have lost power in his beak - doesn't seem to be able to crack his sunflowers anymore. He gets a varied diet of seed and fresh greens. I have started him on some vitamins in his water but is there anything else I can do for him?

Hand raised albino cockatiel in need of loving home. Owned & loved by my daughter but we are moving to rental property which will not accommodate her. We would all be much happier if she was going to a loving home.

Hi folks. I 'rescued' a cockatiel from the RSPCA in Dubbo in 2012 and it has a leg band with NCSA 04-150 on it. I was told the bird came from the Sydney area. Does the band identify the bird?

We bought a 12 weeks old hand reared cockatiel from a pet shop. We believed all hand reared cockatiels are tamed, however after one week staying with us, our bird is still afraid of us and just wants to stay in a cage. What advice people have for taming our bird.

Could you please help me or direct me to someone who could? I have a male cockatiel who is suffering from grief, it's very sad. He lost his partner of 13 years last November (2013) and he's a completely changed bird. He used to love me, now he HATES me (I think he thinks I killed his partner). He used to talk and now he doesn't and he bites me now, viciously. His only friend is his mirror. I don't want to take the mirror away. Is there ANYONE that might loan me a female hand raised cockatiel until he dies (I think he is 14yo), just to make him happy again? I'd be happy to pay full price for her as long as I could send her back later to a GOOD home (I don't want birds after Freddy dies). I have a very good home and I'm a responsible owner (I can send photos of their "indoor/outdoor" cages which are prety big! Or is this just a dumb idea? Thanks for listening.

Please help me.. I had 3 cockatiel birds, all of which I had to move from in my living room downstairs in the laundry where the temperature drops significantly. I put a snake across the bottom of the door to prevent breeze from blowing in & put a hand towel on their play gym to snuggle up to if they get too cold. They were down there for 1 month as I have a newborn baby & didn't want their fine feathers getting in her lungs. Sadly I neglected them with tender love & care as I have no time to show them affection with a new baby as a single parent so I only went down there to give them fresh seed & water. My eldest is 24 years old. One of my three cockatiels suddenly died & I don't know if it was my fault & I'm hoping you can tell me. My poor baby that died had part of his beak pealed off it looked cracked. His eyelids & eyes were indented in like they had caved in his face. Underneath him he had a mess that looked something like diarrhea bowel movement down his tail. What do these sound like to you? Can a hand reared cockatiel die from lack of human interaction/loneliness? (None of my birds were close to each other so wouldnt cuddle up to one another) What are signs of a cockatiel that has frozen to death?

I have a hand raised girl cockatiel, about 3 yrs old and I think she is a pastel silver. She is very broody and we have heard that this is a good age to get her a companion bird. We are not looking to breed particularly, but would like her to have a companion as we are getting busier as the kids grow older.

I have a 2-3 month old hand raised cockatiel,4 days ago she was on my shoulder near hot water and unfortunately flew into the water, she was there briefly but has received fairly bad burns to her legs, her underbelly and a little under her wings. She is still alert but extremely lethargic, her food intake is not as good as it was but she is still eating, drinks water regularly and is sleeping a lot.We have taken her to the local vet who has injected her 4 times with fluid and they gave us a cream and anti=biotics.I feel so silly for having her so close to hot water is there any other suggestions that may help?

Greetings, I have a beautiful Cockatiel named Peppi, I think he is about one year old, I bought him at a pet shop about a year ago, I was just escorting a friend but this little bird flirted with me so intensely that I felt he wanted out, so I bought him.....he has been with me a year and I absolutely adore him, but with a heavy heart I know that I am leaving the country in 12 months and will have to leave him behind, along with Prince, who I was given as company for Peppi, both Cockatiels, but unlike Peppi, Prince is quite reserved...both are free to explore the huge room outside of their cage with many perches which I have built........basically I want to find a special person who will love these two birds as much as I do.......every morning I spend about 15 minutes gently scratching Peppi's head, which he makes these site little bird sounds of appreciation..........I really need to find someone very special, so am reaching out here so that you could help me find someone who will look after them for me when I leave.......many thanks, Nat Ferfoglia

Hi I found a cockatiel last week which I have been caring for. I will be unable to keep it as I have 2 dogs that are not happy. I have advertised on various lost pets websites, contacted the local Council and put it on the RSPCA website and so far had no response. I shall keep it for the rest of the week in case the owner gets in touch but cannot keep it longer than that. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can find a good, safe and loving home for it? It is a lovely little bird but I do not know a great deal about birds, their associations or really where to start. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have recently bought a pair of cockatiels for breeding to hand raise for my children. I have no way of telling the sex of the pair only to go by what I have been told by the breeder. He felt the pelvic bone and said that’s how he does it. I have been now told this is not very accurate. I am trying to find someone to email some pictures to for a second option. Could you help put my mind at ease? I think he said they were pearl pied. I have always had budgies and hand raised them for the kids but seem not to knowledgeable when it comes to Cockatiels. They seem to have the trats of male female but I am still unsure after all the research I have done. Thanks

I have a 9 year old Cockatiel which Ive raised since a chick (Jack Sparrow). We ended up giving him total attention after the loss of our little dog as Jack was fretting for her badly and refused to eat and started removing his feathers. He is doing very well now, however we may be inheriting my grandmothers cockatiel as she can no longer care for her. I'm desperately worried about introducing another bird to the house as I know Jack is 'the top dog'. Any ideas, suggestions, etc????

We recently brought a 12week old cockatiel from our local pet shop. When we first got her home, she wasn't eating seed, only the dry lorikeet mix she'd been trying at the pet shop(they had rainbows & all food was together) we had some dry mix here as we'd had a honey eater previously. After 2 days she slowly started eating the smallest seeds & drinking water. We have now had her approx 1week & tonight she had blood in her poo. She has done approx 7 poos since & every one of them is bloody, we are very concerned & want 2 know how we can help her if at all,its after hours here but we plan on taking her back 2 the pet shop in the morning & find out what's happening 2 her & why,if u could contact us asap I'd really appreciate it,thanks

I am looking for a lovely home for my 2 hens, grey in colour. They are healthy but not tame and and I bought them from the annual bird show at Fairfield. I am hoping to get some advice for my cockatiel that has become unwell. He is in quite a large inside cage that we could take him up to the local vet in but I am quite concerned that they may have to handle him which he has never liked which would cause considerable stress to him. And I am also not sure of (a normal vets) knowledge for cockatiels ? He is 15 years old and has always been in very good health until about a week ago he started puffing up constantly and became quite obsessed with his food. He also stopped his normal singing and noises which have been replace with just a short cheep. He is still managing to get around his cage but when he is resting he seems to be labouring and as I said very puffed up. I am in two minds as to what to do as I do not want him to suffer and would like to help him but the stress that would be involved for him at the vet at his age does not make me feel sure of taking him to our vet - we have never had to take him before. If anyone recognises any of the symptoms that that I have described it would be very much appreciated if you could comment on my post. Thank you.

Hey there. Over the years we’ve taken in a number of cockatiels but my parents are looking to move soon and I won’t be able to take all of them with me into an apartment. Looking for a home for two males and a female, one of the males is the son of the other two. All three are aviary birds, familiar with humans but unwilling to be too close. The female is pale yellow cinnamon, and the male is dark grey with a white face. Their offspring have been really beautiful, pure pale yellow.

I have an approx. 5 year old female cockatiel. She has laid phantom eggs previously and has recently been displaying the behaviours of tail raising, continuous 'song', seasonal aggression etc. However, in the last 2 days she just wants to be on my shoulder and appears to be having difficulty with her balance and now sits leaning forward and slightly hunched so she doesn't over balance. She is still eating, drinking and preening as usual. Any ideas on what might be going on with her? Thank you in advance.

We are a small group of people from India and in the process of forming a cockatiel society. Can you please help us by sending us details on the Standard Cockatiel set by your club and followed by members of your club. I would be obliged if they are emailed to me. Thanks.

Can I sterilize commercially bought millet sprays? If so, how do I do this and will the sprays be safe for my bird to eat?

My 14 year old cockatiel has recently lost his mate of the same age who had incurable kidney disease. He is coping well, is out of the cage most of the day flying around, and we constantly have his favourite music playing (Ronnie Ronaldo and other whistlers) but he is obviously missing his friend as I hear him calling out a lot when I am not in the room. Is it a good idea to play real bird song CDs? He goes crazy when I put one on but I do not know if it is helping or only a reminder of his loss so not a good idea. He will not look at a mirror and I have the feeling would not readily accept another bird at his age.

Hi, I think a baby cockateil has landed in my yard. I have fed and watered it and it is very friendly, however I have two cats and a dog that will not let it rest! What do I do with it? I’m in Keilor East.

Hi, We have a male yellow cockatiel (about 5yrs - hand reared) that we would like to rehome. The kids have left home and we are rarely home and we think it would be better if he was with a family or other birds. Are you able to steer us in the right direction? Comes with cage and all remaining gear and food etc. Can send photos and deliver within 2-3 hours of Port Stephens NSW. Please feel free to call 0427 082 521. Regards Tim Deverell

Hi. 12 months ago I found a cockatiel in a tree on my property being attacked. We saved it and have kept it since advertised on fb rspca and local vets. But none came forward. I can no longer keep her and need to rehome. She has been hand raised and flies around the house sits on shoulder etc. Can you please provide advice who might be able to assist. She is white and Gray and no yellow.
