Birth of our Club

October 2004: To commemorate our 10th year anniversary, I take much pleasure in repeating an article that was written by the first editor, in our first magazine. It tells of how our club was conceived and given life.

On September 16, 1994, Brian Waters & Peter Butler were talking on the phone. Nothing unusual about that, they often spoke on the phone. Brian was stirring Peter; he reciprocated, about starting a Cockatiel Society in N.S.W. Nothing unusual about that either, they had been discussing that for over 18 months without really taking each other seriously. However on this occasion both took each other a little more seriously, and, as it happened, Greg Wilcox was standing nearby listening.

Brian told Peter there was no way he'd start a Club until he had a good secretary waiting in the wings.

At this point Greg mentioned that the Finch Society had asked him to become their Secretary. When Brian heard this he told Greg if he was going to be the Secretary for any Bird Club it would be a Cockatiel Club. Soon a three-way-conversation began, with Peter still on the phone. Greg protested that he didn't really know enough about cockatiels, having only one pair for his daughter. Brian reassured him that as a bird lover, he'd do fine, with Greg agreeing to stand as secretary. All this was at about 10.00am.

This was all the motivation Brian needed to swing into action, it was something he'd wanted to do anyway, he just didn't want to do it all on his own.

Peter, who thought that both Brian and Greg were just joking, rang Brian again at about 2.00 pm that same afternoon, and was greeted with the news that Brian had already placed all the ads for the Club, and had begun enquiries about the possible venue for our first meeting.

Peter, now convinced it was all really happening, agreed to accept the position of president, with Brian agreeing to take charge of initial promotion of the club, recruiting members, drumming up donations & advertising, and would thereafter become refreshments officer.

By weeks end, Brian had enlisted me as editor, Wayne Helder as ring steward and Michael Morris as Librarian. Everything was definitely go, go, go.

Within the first week, more than 15 members had been recruited, and some advertising had also been secured. Brian had also successfully obtain several donations. By the end of the 2nd week the hall was booked for our first meeting, magazine was well under way, further sponsors were being sought, more ads were placed promoting our Club and the hall was paid for.

Organisation is ongoing in preparation of our first meeting, with approximately 40 or so who have indicated they will be attending, hopefully there will be more.

All indications are for a wonderfully successful first meeting, with several raffles being organized, a fantastic door prize, bird sales, table sales and as much more excitement as can be arranged, and an exciting informative new club to afford all cockatiel owners & breeders and lovers of this charming little bird, some where to go to discuss and learn about their passion.

I will be sure to inform everyone, who is unable to attend our first meeting, of the events of the evening. To all those who will be there, I look forward to meeting you.

Quite a story! Curious about how their first night went? Read on and find out how their evening turned out. - Editor

WHAT A NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

Our inaugural meeting was more like a gale celebration than the first meeting of a fledgling club. I'm sure everyone there had a wonderful night, and if last night was any indication of the future of our club, 'Flying High, Smooth Sailing & Super Success' are just a few of the superlatives that can be used to describe our future.

There was a ton of raffles, a ton of prizes (Donated by: - Bulk Bird Wire, Animal World, Healthy Bird Products, Central Pets, Forrester's Beach Pet Shop & Crystal Pet & Wire centre), several ton of food and beverages, and more people there than any one of us had anticipated to help us successfully launch our new club.

A big Thank You to all our donors, and an especially big thanks to all those who attended our special evening, and congratulations to all those wonderful people who are now our wonderful members. What more can I say about you all, except to bid you all a hearty Welcome!!!! I'm sure that with all of you joining us, our club can do nothing but succeed. Thank you all.

All of the executive committee vacancies were filled with ease and enthusiasm. They are all here to help you with any club matters, and you'll find their phone numbers on the "Executive Committee" page.

All of us were so busy, selling raffle tickets, accepting new membership forms, writing out name tags, etc, etc, that the evening passed with surprising speed, and before we knew it, it was all over. With the departure of our visitors and new members, the committee members gathered to take stock of the evening's events. It was not until we sat and chattered that we all realised just how successful everything had been. Needless to say we were all pleased with the outcome, but without all of our new members and visitors, the night would not have been as wonderful as it was. Again thank you all.

A very happy ED.

Well! what a night that turned out to be. I can only say to everyone who ever was a member, and especially those who are still members. A great big THANK YOU, because if it was not for your participation and contribution, I would not be producing this 10th Anniversary Edition of our magazine. - Editor
