would you have any references for building an outside aviary.
perhaps plans or drawings if not, somebody that constructs an aviary with experience for my cockatiels.
the maximum size the council i believe is 10mtr sq and a maximum of 2 per house.
i am thinking of using stainless steel wire.
i reside in the sydney area.
thank you.

I am looking for a hand reared juvinial cockatiel.
I would love a cinnamon pied whiteface but I would just love one that is grey and white, not wanting the yellow cheek. I am located in Toowoomba/Warwick. I am happy to travel.

Hi there,

I have a cockatiel that recently had her companion pass away. Since then she has become very anti social, and she has actually started to hiss and attack me when I try to clean her cage toys and food bowls. I've tried talking to her and giving her lots of attention, but I think she is just too upset.

At this time, I can't get another companion for her, and so I have been wondering if there are any breeders who would like another pretty bird?

Where are you situated? How old is she? What colour is she?
I am in Nambucca Heads, looking for young..ish grey/normal cockatiel to hopefully breed from.

How can you tell a male tiel from a female tiel and secondly, can you teach a female tiel to talk as well as a male tiel?

What is the price of a 3 month cinammon tiel?

Some mutations are very hard to sex. It is almost impossible to guarantee the sex of a young cockatiel just by looking at it, DNA sexing is one sure way. If your in Australia You can get your bird DNA sexed. Please look at the links section of our website.
The price of a bird has many factors, urgency to sell by the current owner, condition, markings, is it handraised or aviary bred, availabilty in your area, etc... so you can see just saying a price is not an easy task.Females will talk some better than males, cockatiels are quite individual so just saying males are better talkers than females is not always the rule. The owners effort is a much more significant factor in teaching a bird to talk.

A friend's cockatiel (more lika a soul mae) recently died from Lead poisoning. This wonderful character (the bird), whose name is Buddy had contracted a viral disease and spent some time at the Vet. As a welcome home, Buddy's devoted owner purchases a new and better cage. Buddy was dead within a couple of weeks. There was no warning on the new cage or instructions on preparing the cage for safe use. Is this a common problem? Is there some point of contact for Buddy's owner to try to have some warning system put in place to protect others from this horrible and unnecessary fate.

Thankyou

This is a common problem known as heavy metal poisoning. There is quite a lot of info on the net on this subject. Unfortunatley alot of the cages we buy are imported from oversear and because they are for animal use the labeling for safety is probably under estimated rather than if it were an item for human use.Perhaps the Dept of Fair Trading could be a start if your in Australia :

I was told by my vets to wash a cage out with warm, soapy water and then spray it all over with vinegar (a natual disinfectant) and then let the cage dry naturally in the sun. It has always worked for me, when I've prepared my cages...

I hope this helps!

I have 2 cockatiels one is definitely a female as she is laying eggs. She begs her partner to come to the party but he?? doesn't seem to know what to do. Does all the lovey dovey bits of preening etc but I know he hasn't done the deed. What can be done, or should I do.
Thank you

Are you sure you have one female and one male ? Just because one is laying eggs does not neccessarilly mean its male. You can get your bird DNA sexed. Please look at the links section of our website. Regards Patrick

I have a pearl cockatiel ,how can you tell the sex, likes males not females not a squawker but has started a habit of sitting on top of the cage talking in cockatiel quietly,i can do anything with it scratch his head with my nose, hope the bloody thing is not falling in love with me,does,nt talk yet.

At around 6 months of age, pearl cockatiels will start to lose the pearl pattern. The older they get the more obvious it becomes. That is as they moult and as the new feathers grow back they will have less and less of the pearl pattern. Females on the other hand will maintain their strong pearl pattern for life. I cannot be sure if it loves you or not, its coming up to Valentines Day soon, so maybe keep an eye out for the mail box. There may be something in it for you from the cockatiel. ha ha :)

I'm concern about my female cockatiel, on Oct 18, 11 she mate, after that she had a ball under her breast, so I thought she was pregnant now the ball went down and it's close to the cloaca but she has not lay any eggs, she goes inside her box with the male and stays there but nothing happens. She looks find, she is eating and acting normal but I don't think that it takes that long to lay eggs. Can you tell me please what is wrong with her?

I am moving to Darwin, NT, Australia from the U.S.A. I have a pet cockatiel, but from what I've seen, no birds (pets or otherwise) are allowed in to Australia unless they are coming from New Zealand. I understand the nature of this policy, since it would be terrible for Australia's native birds to be exposed to diseases, etc. However, my pet cockatiel is a member of my family, would never be going outside (at most, on a balcony), and would not be exposing other birds to illnesses, even if she were sick. Does anyone know of any way to have an exception made for a single pet bird? Any paperwork I can fill out? We're heartbroken at the prospect of leaving her.

Thank you for this website! However, it does seem as though this application is only for animals that have zoological or research purposes. Is this incorrect?

I have cut one of my birds wings so it couldn't fly but now i keep it inside all the time i want the wings to grow back so it can fly around .How long do the wings take to grow back or do new feathers have to replace the old.

Reply
06/03/2012 12:39am

Depending on how the wings have been clipped it could take anything uptp 18 months to fully grow back, although your bird will be able to fly somewhat in around 6 to 8 months

The feathers shouldn't take long to grow back. Just make sure that with any birds, NEVER cut past the third set of feathers on wings as you could accidently nick the blood vein running through it and the bird could suffer and die...

It's harder on smaller birds like budgies and smaller breeds, if in doubt, DONT.

I I had a lovely grey and white cockatiel sitting in my front verandah this afternoon, he/she is super tame and very friendly. It has a purple band with NCSA on it. We would love o keep it but not if it is someone's loved pet! Can you please let e know if there is any way I can identify the owner by the band?

Kate, I can find the breeder info on this bird as we keep records but I will need the ring number and a small 2 digit number on the ring which is engraved verticle on the ring.

Hi there, I have a sweet little female Lutino who looks like she is about to lay eggs. She hides under the paper on the floor of her cage (when she isn't eating it) and will hiss a bit at me when I talk to her. Later she will quite happily come out of her cage for her cuddles. She isn't ill and is eating and drinking okay. Is this normal. Also, how can I get her to eat fruit and veg...I have tried before and she ignores it :)

How often are you allowed to feed a weiro a seed stick. I was told that they are not that good for them because of the seeds. Is this right or not?

Reply

They contain lots of sugar so limit how many you give, make it a treat not a normal part of the diet.

Is it normal for a weiro to change personality after they have turned one? My bird use to got to everyone but now she just avoids everyone but me. I think this is because she sulks when I go to school and also because I raised her. Am I right?

Reply

She possibly spends more time with you and therefore you have become her best friend. It is common for a bird to become attached more to some people than others.

Hi, Our club has a poster of cockatiel muatations and the last picture on it is of a double crested bird. I have looked everywhere but cannot find any info on this mutation. Does it really exist??

I have never seen one, nor have heard of it. But it may exist, there are mutations overseas that are not avialable in Australia.

How much do the clip/rings that you put on you bird cost?

Can you still put them on when your bird is 1 or 2

Reply

They are approximately 50 cents to $1 each. You will need split leg rings to put on an adult bird.
